What is ADMS and Why Update Firmware?

ADMS (Advanced Device Management System)

ZKBioTime software works with biometric devices whose firmware is built with the PUSH/ADMS feature. This enables:

  • Automatic data transmission — Devices automatically send attendance data to the server when new events are registered
  • Real-time synchronization — User data (names, fingerprints, faces, cards) sync automatically from server to devices
  • Bi-directional communication — Server can send commands and receive responses from devices instantly
  • Network configuration — Devices must know the server IP address to establish communication

Important: Without PUSH/ADMS firmware, biometric devices cannot communicate with ZKBioTime software. Manual data collection via USB would be required.

Step-by-Step Firmware Update Process

Step 1: Download Firmware
  • Get the correct firmware file for your device model
  • Verify firmware version compatibility
  • Download ADMS USB update tool
  • Extract files to USB drive
Step 2: Prepare USB Drive
  • Format USB drive (FAT32)
  • Copy firmware files to root directory
  • Ensure file names match requirements
  • Safely eject USB drive
Step 3: Update Device
  • Power off the biometric device
  • Insert USB drive into device port
  • Power on device while holding update key
  • Wait for update completion (LED indicators)
Step 4: Verify Update
  • Device restarts automatically
  • Check firmware version in device menu
  • Verify PUSH/ADMS feature is enabled
  • Remove USB drive safely
Step 5: Configure Server
  • Access device network settings
  • Enter BioTime server IP address
  • Set server port (default: 4370)
  • Enable PUSH communication
Step 6: Test Connection
  • Device should appear in BioTime
  • Test user synchronization
  • Verify attendance data transmission
  • Check real-time connection status

Common Issues & Solutions

Firmware update failed or device not responding

Solutions:

  • Verify you're using the correct firmware file for your exact device model
  • Format USB drive to FAT32 (not exFAT or NTFS)
  • Try a different USB drive (some devices are picky about USB compatibility)
  • Ensure firmware file is in the root directory, not in a folder
  • Check if you're holding the correct button during power-on (consult device manual)
Device not connecting to BioTime after firmware update

Checklist:

  • Verify device and server are on the same network (or VPN is configured)
  • Confirm server IP address is correctly entered in device
  • Check firewall rules allow port 4370 (BioTime default)
  • Ensure PUSH feature is enabled in device settings
  • Restart both device and BioTime service
How long does firmware update take?

Typically 2-5 minutes depending on device model. Do not power off or remove USB during update. LED indicators will show progress (usually blinking patterns). Device will restart automatically when complete.

Can I rollback to previous firmware version?

Yes, you can downgrade firmware by following the same USB update process but using an older firmware file. However, this may cause data loss. Always backup device data before firmware changes.

Will user data be erased during firmware update?

Usually NO — firmware updates preserve user data (fingerprints, faces, records). However, it's best practice to backup data via BioTime before updating firmware, especially for major version upgrades.
